Globally marine fisheries are suffering from species decline with many populations verging on collapse. Choosing locally sourced sustainable seafood is a key to marine conservation, yet few of us know which species are ecologically safe to eat. Join artist/biologist Brandon Ballengée on a seafood market survey of fishes, mollusks, arthropods and other species. Ballengée will discuss encountered species natural history, ecological status and collectively we will choose specimens for a dissection and preservation workshop following the tour. When back at the lab participants will learn how to dissect and preserve specimens at a Natural History Museum standard. Participants will be able to keep their preserved specimens.

Brief Biography: Ballengée’s art has been exhibited internationally and in 2013 the first career survey of his work debuted at the Château de Charamarande in Essonne (France), and travelled to the Museum Het Domein in Sittard (Netherlands) in 2014. His works have been included in several international biennales and festivals including: Armory Art Fair (USA: 2015); Documenta 13 (Germany: 2012); Prospect 2 New Orleans (USA: 2011); Transmediale 11 (Germany: 2010); 3rd Moscow Biennale (Russia: 2009); Venice Biennale (Italy: 2005); and others. In 2011 he was awarded a conservation leadership fellowship from National Audubon Society (USA). In 2014 he was awarded a Ph.D. focused on amphibian biology and ecological art from the University of Plymouth (England).
